Malta, the smallest European Union (EU) member state, with a population of 425,384, has a universal health system where care is mainly provided freely by the state, alongside a small private sector (National Statistics Office [Malta], 2014). In Malta, cancer mortality as a proportion of all mortality is increasing— rising from 24% in 1997 to 26.6% in 2007 and 26.9% in 2013 (England, 2013). The Maltese cancer strategy, launched in 2011, requires strong public health leadership and transdisciplinary competence and collaboration (Ministry for Health, the Elderly and Community Care [Malta], 2011). By adopting a One Health approach in the prevention of cancers, Malta aims to achieve earlier diagnosis, lower mortality, and better survival rates for treatable cancers.en_GB
