dc.description.abstract | Like other nuclear medicine procedures, positron emission tomography (PET) differs from other imaging modalities in that it demonstrates physiological function of the system being investigated rather than anatomy. Tracer distribution and concentration is followed, hence allowing doctors to monitor the various cellular and molecular events taking place. A nuclear physician has the advantage of being able to interpret the superimposed images of a PET and a computed tomography (CT) scan concomitantly. This gives specialists much more confidence in writing definitive PET/CT reports: adding metabolic to anatomic data is synergistic with obvious advantages over stand-alone CT, or even stand-alone PET | en_GB |
