Abstract: Family life in Malta has gone through dramatic and unprecedented changes over the years. The end of the Second World War might be considered as a new beginning for Malta. I will therefore use it as a starting point highlighting the major turning points for the family and will cite relevant literature where this is available The changing values and beliefs which are informed by our colonial historical background, our political mind-set, the family-oriented pastoral activity of the Roman Catholic Church and its waning influence, the advent of the second demographic transition on our islands and the impact of globalization will serve as a cultural conceptual framework for making sense of the changes in family life over the years.
