Two years ago, Tunisia used to be regarded as a police state, with serious human rights problems, with no freedom of expression, no freedom of association, no civil society, in the sense that means a civil society which can “serve as effective checks on Government power and sources of independent influence on it”. The few Civil Society organizations that did exist were tightly controlled by the Regime and couldn’t play their role. The political unrest which began in December 2010 ultimately toppled the President Ben Ali and his Government on 14 January 2011. The People of Tunisia gained the fabulous liberty of expression, the freedom of opinion, which offered spontaneously a space for the emergence of an effective civil society.en_GB
