Towards the north of Malta, not far off from the old military road leading to St. Andrew's Barracks from St. George's Bay in St. Julians on a grid reference of 538762 lies a discrete man-made aperture in what seems, from afar, to be a smooth quarry face. The escarpment was noted by the 1956 British Survey, which produced on a scale of two inches to the mile Malta's Geological Map. Also the older Ordinance Survey Sheets (OSS No. 43) of the 1 :2500 scale took note of this peculiarity. The map pertaining to Count Ciantar's 1772 book on Malta calls the place "Chark el Hamiem" at Cala S. Giorgio which is portrayed as flanked by Torri S. Giorgio, on the one side, and Git Zebbuggi with Dragonara point, then apparently known as Ponta Ghemmuna, on the other.en_GB
