Abstract: On June 12th, 1798 the last Sovereign Grand Master of Malta, Fra Ferdinand von Hompesch formally surrendered the Islands to Napoleon Bonaparte and the tricolore was hoisted above the Magistral Palace at Valletta. Many Maltese nobles and a few of the Knights themselves had actively supported the French invasion. The Maltese Nobles came to regret their imprudent action as the Republican forces stripped them of all their titles and privileges and taxed them heavily.
