Abstract: Pius V attributed the Holy League's resounding victory at Lepanto (1571) to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin. In humble gratitude he instituted a new Marian feast "Our Lady of Victory"' which, in accordance to his instructions, used to be celebrated on the anniversary of the Battle of Lepanto (7 October) although it has since been moved. In the same context the Pope decreed that the Virgin Mary was to be hailed in the Litany with the new appellation of Auxilium Christianarum - Help of Christians.
