Abstract: Catacombs are generally identified with the period of the Roman emperors' persecution of the early Christians. Maltese catacombs do, however, seem to be an exception to the rule. They were usually designed as underground cemeteries or burial chambers, often being dug alongside other graves dating from pre-Christian times.
