Abstract: | The Crimean War, which broke out in March 1854, pushed Ma lta to the forefront of internat ional affairs and made it "a great naval and military arsenal" for British armed forces in the Mediterranean. Its strategy was fully deployed and , as long as the war lasted , its Governor, Sir William Reid (1851 -58), turned it into a real advance station of the battlefront. It provided safe training centres for recruits, served as a food and ammunition depot and also hospitalized the numerous war casualties that were continually a rriving from the battlefield. |
