A phased programme of fieldwork was devised to explore fully the potential of the Circle as indicated from the antiquarian records and illustrations that described the site from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The programme involved pre-survey study in 1986, the application of several methods of remote sensing in March and June 1987 and August-September 1988, combined with an intensive annual programme of excavation in 1987-91 and 1993-94. This was further consolidated by a sustained post-excavation research programme sampling environmental materials, recording bone, pottery and finds, dating, analysing results and preparing reports and the final monograph. A large number of consultants and specialists were involved (see Acknowledgements).en_GB
