Women's Groups: Anna Callus (1992) maintains that the first women's movement in Malta was The Women of Malta Association, which was set up in 1944. The intention of this group was to promote the liberal right for women to vote and be elected. Another group, the National Council of Women (NCW), was set up in 1964. The National Council of Women worked to remove the legal and social obstacles that prevent women's participation in the legal, economic and social spheres (Darmanin, 1992). In 2015 the Malta National Council of Women is still going strong and is very active on a local, European and international level.en_GB
