In August, 1918 No. 267 Seaplane Squadron, Royal Air Force was formed at Kalafrana and so began the long and happy connection between the Royal Air Force and Malta which became as old as the service itself. The history of R.A.F. Luqa is in fact one of the most important that the British Services left after March 31st, 1979. There are many things to recall and the part played by this establishment should never be overlooked. In the 1930's the Defence Chiefs originally decided that in the event of war, Malta would be indefensible against air attacks from bases in Sicily but later this decision was altered and in summer of 1939 the Committee of Imperial Defence approved the idea of providing four fighter squadrons and 172 anti-aircraft guns for the Island's defence.en_GB
