Abstract: On February 15th, 1837, the Government's official organ - The Malta Government Gazzette - announced "with the greatest pain" the death of Major General the Hon. Sir Frederick Cavendish Ponsonby, G.C.M.G., K.C.B., former Governor of Malta between the years 1832 and 1836. In Malta it was soon decided to erect a Cenotaph as a lasting memento to the memory of the late Governor Ponsonby.
