Until the 12th Century, Christian attitudes were against the use of torture to procure admissions from a person. But in 1252 Pope Innocence IV, for the first time, permitted its use in cases of heresy. The Roman Inquisition, to which the local Tribunal belonged, also resorted to the use of torture on accused persons.en_GB
