Hu twieled l-Imdina fis-sena 1541 u ghamel l-istudji tieghu f'malta. Kien prelat kbir Malti, mar Ruma u hemmhekk il-Papa Gregorju ssokta jgharfu ahjar ghal-merti tieghu - innominh Isqof ta' Sidonja fl-Asja Minuri, Sena wara fl-1583 baghtu bhala Nunzju Appostoliku fil-Lvant. L-Isqof Abela kif wasal Ruma, ipprezenta rapport dwar il-qaghda tal-Knejjes tal-Lvant. Il-Papa Sistu wkoll gharaf il-gherf, il-hila u t-tjieba ta ' Mons. Abela, u ddecieda li jzommu hdejh f'Ruma.
