dc.description.abstractThe 1964-65 season had an unusual and' truly memorable prelude in the open-air concert of operatic music at Mdina during the Independence celebrations. The occasion was memorable not so much for the music and the singing, though some of this was good, as for the splendor, the magic of the setting. The old city had been specially floodlit for the celebrations and look·ed like something out of a story-book as one drove towards it. The cathedral square, the cathedral itself acting as a superb backcloth, was a peerless auditorium - it even has a rake that made good sightlines possible for people at the back.en_GB
