Abstract: The pale, listless septuagenarian's physical resistance was giving way and Dr. Petrino Xuereb, army physician, knew that the patient was too weak for drug-based anaesthesia. The surgeon had to treat urgently a case of hernia but he knew he had to resort to healing without medicine or ether. Then the doctor remembered how, years previously he had operated upon soldiers at Mtarfa Hospital with the assistance of a timid-looking Maltese recruit in His Majesty's army who had studied readings on the curtive treatment of disease by hypnotic suggestion. The surgeon made a frantic summons: "Get Dominic Gruppetta!"
