Background Diabetes is a serious chronic condition that imposes a substantial burden on public health care both locally and worldwide resulting in an increase in the demand for inpatient care. Objectives The aim of the study was to evaluate a nurse run diabetes service in collaboration with two local councils in Malta. The main objectives were to evaluate the clients' perceptions of the nurse-led diabetes services, evaluate the information given to the clients and the clients' awareness about diabetes. Design For the purpose of this study a qualitative approach was used. Twelve participants were chosen from 30 clients using the local council nursing service in 3 localities in Malta. Participants were interviewed in their own home environment. Participants In this study the researcher used stratified random sampling so that all the thirty clients receiving the service had an equal probability to participate. Due to time constraints only 12 clients were randomly selected. Methods Data was collected using a structured interview conducted in Maltese. Data was analysed using qualitative content analyses. Frequencies were used in the analyses of demographic date without the need to use statistical tests. Results All the participants who were selected participated in the study. The results indicated that the clients were satisfied with the service and were able to control their diabetes. Participants perceived the nurse to be a part of their family and felt that there was a good collaborative relationship and that their needs were met. The nurse provided information, education, and treatment by using a client-centred approach. Conclusion The results of this study suggest that the diabetes nurse-led services are an effective way in reaching out clients who have difficulties visiting health centres or the local hospital. This service should be made more widely available to other localities in Malta. The service is cost effective and brings care to the clients' home. The success of this service requires the continuous education of nurses to ensure that they are updated with new trends in the management of diabetes. For future research it is advisable to do a cohort study involving all clients who are using this service. An audit of the current service should also be carried out in order to identify possible changes required for improvement of such service.en_GB
