This Report contains a detailed analysis of the deaths that occurred in the Maltese Islands during 1995. It has been compiled by Dr Renzo Pace Asciak, the Principal Medical Officer in charge of the National Mortality Registry. It complements the data submitted to the Central Office of Statistics for publication in the Annual Demographic Review and the data submitted to the World Health Organisation for publication in the World Health Statistics Annual. Although this is the third Annual Mortality Report prepared by the Registry, it is the first time that it is being formally printed and published. In 1995. Malta was among the first five countries in Europe to implement the lOth revision of the International Classification of Disease (ICD-10) for the coding and classification of causes of death. Malta was also one of the first countries to respond to the World Health Organisation's request for smaller categories of data on deaths in elderly persons. The Registry constantly strives to improve the quality of its reporting, in view of the importance of the information that is derived from its data. As is customary, this Annual Mortality Report is being published a little less than a year after the period it covers. This timing is similar to that of the Demographic Review and the World Health Statistics Annual, as well of comparable publications abroad. In view of the heavy demand for timely mortality data, the Department is considering publishing 1996 data in the second trimester of 1997, by which time the extraordinary procedures surrounding accidental and violent deaths in 1996 would have been concluded, allowing the Registry to finalise its figures. The unavailability of 1996 population figures would reduce the usefulness of early publication, therefore it remains to be decided whether such an approach will in fact be adopted. Another option that will be considered is the publication of provisional figures in advance of the final report. [Preface by Dr Hugo Agius Muscat]en_GB
