Annual mortality reports 1996-97

Abstract

The main aim of the Department ofHealth Information's Annual Mortality Report is to provide a more detailed analysis oflocal mortality data than those already available in publications such as the Demographic Review ofthe Maltese Islands and the World Health Statistics Annual. Internal factors related to the move of the Department to new premises late in 1997 prevented the earlier publication ofthe 1996 and 1997 reports. It is expected that the 1998 report will be published later this year. Both the 1996 and the 1997 reports improve upon the 1995 report in terms of the information provided. Of particular interest in the 1997 report are the standardised mortality rates by individual locality. This analysis makes use of population figures resulting from the 1995 Census. This is the first time that such a meaningful comparative analysis by locality has been published. [Preface by Dr. Hugo Agius Muscat]
