National Disability Survey 1999

Abstract

In 1991, the National Commission Persons with Disability (NCPD) started an exercise with the aim of gathering as much information as possible about the state of disabled persons in the Maltese Islands. Using a questionnaire, the NCPD started gathering statistics which could help it analyse the requirements of disabled persons and their families, initiate programmes and devise strategies to address these requirements and assess the success of these initiatives. During 1992 and 1993, hundreds of questionnaires were filled in and then the laborious process of entering the data into a database was started. Initially Dataease software was used for this storage; in 1994, the data was converted into dBase IV format. The data was kept in a secure and confidential set-up. In 1994, the first analysis ofthe data was undertaken. 3330 questionnaires were sampled and over 70 pages of information were presented to the public in 1995. This report was based on information entered into the database up to December 1994.
