Abstract: The Federation of Societies for the Handicapped had a directory of its members which it wished to update. The Health Education Unit publishes information within its Newsletter on self-help groups in the health field. Professionals receiving this Newsletter expressed a wish to have this information brought together in one publication. The National Commission for the Handicapped, which is responsible for coordinating, at a national level, work for the handicapped, wanted this directory to include all groups with which it is in regular contact. For this reason, the three organisations came together to collect and publish this directory. It is aimed at professionals who may have clients who might benefit from referral to one of these groups. It is also aimed at the groups themselves, providing them with material which is easily copied and used as publicity or information material. This directory is published in loose-leaf format for two reasons. First, each leaf should be considered as a publication of the group itself. Second, this format facilitates future additions and amendments without the need for a complete re-print. We therefore suggest that this directory is kept in a ring file for reference and future insertions will then easily be made. Finally, some practical advice. If any group included here undergoes changes, please inform the National Commission for the Handicapped. If you would like to discuss any of the information printed in this directory, approach the group concerned. The Health Education Unit is planning to publish a second volume covering self-help and other groups in areas of health other than handicap. If you know of any group which merits inclusion in that volume, please contact the Health Education Unit.
