This study focuses on employees working on a shift basis. The aim of the study is to investigate how workers with atypical work schedules attain work-life balance and asses the implications of shifts on their physical, mental and social wellbeing. To gain further knowledge on this topic, books, academic papers and journals were perused. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight individuals, four women and four men working within the local health sector. The majority of respondents were in the early to stages of their career. Results showed that individuals working on a shift basis are exposed to a number of challenges, including stress, maintaining relationships, as well as, health issues amongst others. The participants underlined that in order for workers to attain a work-life balance a number of factors have to be taken into consideration. They mentioned the length of shift, research on staff exigencies needed at different times in different settings, positive management-workers relationship, working support networks both at work and in their personal life, and good time management skills. The participants came up with recommendations on how workers can be supported to improve balance between their work and personal lives. These included: improving roster scheduling, introducing childcare facilities at Mater Dei Hospital, and fostering a flexible working culture. Ultimately, these considerations would be beneficial in attaining a better balance between work and personal life, which may lead to a decrease in health problems, relationship conflicts and stress. These dynamics are further explained in the final chapter of this study.en_GB
