Abstract: Literature about surviving and thriving the first years of employment shows that there are particular behaviours one can adopt to start one’s work life successfully whilst at the same time meeting what employers require. The aim of this study is to explore the benefits and challenges that new labour market entrants experience during their initial employment years and how their course of studies has helped or hindered the transition into the world of work. The study is founded on the conceptual framework of Hermeneutical Phenomenology since it is oriented towards the analysis of individual experiences the way these have perceived them. It is this personal insight that gives meaning to the experiences because each individual lives in a specific cultural, familial and historical context. Using a qualitative research design, semi-structured interviews were carried out with each of the eight participants, guided by a prepared interview schedule. The interviews were audio recorded and the data collected was analysed using the thematic analysis methodology. In all phases of the study, due consideration was given to ethical and trustworthiness issues through ongoing self-reflexivity. Three overarching themes were identified – ‘work ethic’, ‘professional development’ and ‘personal goals’. This study highlights the importance of converging the needs of the labour market with those of the prospective employees through an adequate provision of VET methods and content. It is being recommended that apprenticeship schemes should take in consideration the needs of the individual as well as those of the emerging labour market whilst employers and HR managers need to keep abreast of generational traits and adapt the work environment accordingly. These recommendations need to be supported by further research especially where Gen Z is concerned and how this will affect the future shape of the Maltese labour market.
