Analysing costumes as the vital role in the organised carnival in Victoria

Abstract

This dissertation explores the idea of costumes as playing an essential role within Carnival in Victoria and aims to develop a better understanding of their various uses in the number of competitions held during the organised Carnival in Gozo. It does so by (1) analysing costumes as a pedagogical tool in primary school dance competitions; (2) gaining a semiotic understanding through costumes used in adult dance competitions; and by (3) looking at costumes as a theatrical element within the floats competitions.
