Abstract: The past seven decades marked an increase in the importance of non-formal education fuelled by the principle that an all-inclusive education enhances the realization of human potential. Extracurricular activities are a form of nonformal education as they do not follow an official curriculum, content is highly adaptable and time constraints are limited. The objective of this study was to understand whether secondary school students in Form 3, Form 4 and Form 5 view extracurricular activities as a means for academic improvement. Furthermore, the study also sought to identify extracurricular activities considered as useful and any differences between perceptions of different student cohorts, such as impacts of extracurricular activities. The study used a quantitative research design. Data was collected using questionnaires administered to 189 students. A State, two Church, and one independent school participated in this research. These were sampled using a multi-stage and stratified method of sampling. Results show that, at the time of the study, students perceived extracurricular activities as positively contributing to their academic performance and improving their social skills. Sports was viewed as most effective in this regard, particularly among female students and Form 5 students. Students also remarked that extracurricular activities have positive impacts (maintained their self-discipline and an added sense of responsibility) and negative impacts (added more stress and took them away from their work) on their lives. Non-participation in extracurricular activities was due to the time constraints caused by the load of academic work.
