Abstract: Reading helps children to delve into imaginary worlds which are far different from the reality of their everyday lives (Glazzard & Palmer, 2015). Reading also helps widely in the improvement and the development of the literacy skills. Research shows that by sowing the seeds of love for books from home, parents contribute positively to their children’s language development (Kivac, Ollgaard Klem, Benee Olsen, Baekgaard Solnader, Dyrberg von Spreckelsen, Triantafyllou, & Triantafyllidis, 2016). Since not all children have this opportunity, it becomes the teachers’ role to instil this love. The classroom library should be the focal area to build a community of readers by providing students with easy access to books (Sorrell Fractor, Ciruti Woodruff, Martinez & Teale, 1993). Therefore, through this research study, the setting up and usage of classroom libraries and reading areas of all the Junior Years of a local church school were investigated. Even though almost all the participating teachers had classroom libraries set up, they were still not making use of them in the best possible ways. Data collected shows that most of the educators would like to make a better use out of this resource. However, economic issues seem to be making it quite a challenging task for them in developing further a well-stocked and attractive classroom library and/or reading area. For this reason, following the gathered results and findings, some useful recommendations are put forward in order to create effective resources from which the pupils can benefit. Moreover, ideas for future research from which pupils could ultimately benefit, in terms of improved literacy skills, are also given.
