The aim of this study is to identify the barriers and facilitating factors which female mature students studying at undergraduate level face at the University of Malta. This research sought to study their relationship with University staff and students, as well as with their relatives. A qualitative approach was adopted for this dissertation and the participants were interviewed. Six semi-structured interviews were carried out with female undergraduate students coming from different faculties, which were: Faculties of Arts, Education and Health Sciences. The participants varied with regards to age, marital status, caring responsibilities and areas of studies. The main findings of this study were that the initial obstacles faced by female mature students were time, lack of finances and caring responsibilities. Gender role expectations are still somewhat prevalent in today’s society, although we are trying to move to a more equal balance between sexes. Participants recommended more extended child care centre hours, more help and support from home, and a better structured time table, amongst other main points which facilitated their experience at University.en_GB
