Abstract: In this article, Giovanni Bonello analyzes the development of tourism in Malta in the 1950s. Despite being still perceived as a military base, Malta slowly started building up its tourist profile. Independence governments of the 1950s began investing in infrastructures and promotion. To this effect, Dodo (Dolores) Lees was appointed Tourist Advisory Expert from 1955, during the Mintoff government.
