Abstract: This study aims to explore the meaning and converging notions of space, time and place, with regard to Maltese architecture. Moreover, this dissertation seeks to raise awareness about buildings of historical importance which are left to decay at the mercy of nature and time. The objective is to repurpose an abandoned piece of architecture and create a visual narrative of it by making use of the decaying objects contained within it. This was achieved by making use of both traditional and digital media, which include photography, film and sculpture. The aim of the different mediums is to create an effective visual narrative that the audience can relate to and understand. The research methodologies include, practice based research done through exploration and observation of the abandoned place, semi structured interviews, as well as focus groups. The participants involved were exposed to the final body of work, which includes a series a photographic works, and then were asked to give feedback on the effectiveness of the visual narrative. The results show that the visual narrative created was understood by a wide target audience. Moreover, it is evident that the final visual narrative is interpreted differently by each individual and the subjectivity of a person affects the overall narrative of the place. This study pays tribute to Malta’s historical architecture. However, it also raises awareness about the carelessness of this country that leaves such historical gems to decay and become forgotten.
