Abstract: | Using an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, this research focused on the lived experience of partners of cocaine users. While taking the couples' relationship into perspective, it delved deeply into the daily struggles, heartaches and conflicts of loving the partner while hating the addiction. Three semi-structured interviews were held with individuals who are in a committed relationship with partners of heavy cocaine users and who were recruited on a voluntary basis from Sedqa's community services through contact with professionals involved. It was difficult to recruit the fourth participant due to unforeseen circumstances. Interviews were transcribed and common themes extracted. The main findings of this study revealed that female partners of cocaine users are as in much need of help as the users themselves. Some similar underlying personality factors among the partners were identified. However, the drug use environment also proved to be a contributing factor for some of their negative feelings. Lack of knowledge regarding the risks and dangers of cocaine use at the beginning of the relationship also proved to be a significant factor. Various coping strategies were adopted by the female partners in order to deal with their complex scenario. This strengthened the researcher's hypothesis regarding the relationship between dysfunctional coping strategies, developmental factors and attachment styles, all of which appeared to be a contributing factor in the participants' choice of partner. Results of this research shed important light on the major issues to be tackled by professionals and service providers, such as low self-esteem, guilt, helplessness and distorted thinking. |
