Süleyman the Magnificent's decision to attack Malta was taken in October 1564. The island of Malta had become the headquarters of those whom Siileyman described as "infidels", who blocked the route utilised by Muslim pilgrims and merchants in the west Mediterranean, on their way to Egypt. In this article, Arnold Cassola, based upon different historical sources, defends the idea that after taking Malta, Süleyman would have proceeded towards Rome overland, via Sicily.en_GB
