Abstract: The aim of this study is to explore the lived experience of couple perceived similarities and differences, and how these affect the relationship's functioning. The sample consisted of six participants (three couples) who were young adults, and in a heterosexual relationship of five years and over. Data collection consisted of semi-structured interviews, which were audio recorded. Data was then analysed by Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Findings showed that these couples were not entirely similar to or different from their partners. Couples mostly perceived themselves to be similar on the domains of leisure time pursuits and that of attitudes and values, also having similar demographic backgrounds. On the other hand, participants perceived having different personality types, which also meant they would have different communication styles. Similarity was perceived to be positive to the relationship's functioning because it reduced conflict. Differences yielded mixed perceptions; they were evaluated positively because partners complemented each other, but they were also seen as negative due to increasing the risk of conflict.
