The purpose of this study was to discover the nurses' experience and feelings of working with patients with dementia. As people age, they might experience a common disease, known as dementia, which is drastically effecting the ever increasing number of people who suffer from it. The Alzheimer's Society (2011) defines dementia as various different brain disorders that have in common a loss of brain function that is usually progressive and eventually severe.(Alzheimer's Society,2011). The Malta Dementia Society talks about the situation in Malta and a study conducted in 2006 argues the fact that it is estimated that around 4,000 people suffer from this disease. This is due to the fact that since the number of people are living longer is increasing, the number of people with dementia is expected to double in number of cases over the next twenty years. Method Unstructured interviews were chosen as part of the research study method. Eight professional staff nurses were interviewed, all were chosen from dementia ward in a long-term residential home for the elderly. As a guide for the unstructured interviews, preparations and plans were constructed and based on the already published literature. Conclusion This study is going to highlight that patients with dementia should be cared for, respected, and also be situated in a safe, dementia friendly environment, if relatives cannot care for their loved ones for various reasons. There is the need for more knowledge, support, and staff to care for people with dementia. The study recommends for more specially trained staff, due to the high demand of people being diagnosed with dementia.en_GB
