Abstract: This research focuses on ‘The Effect of Substance Abuse on Academic Progress’ of students under the age of eighteen, particularly concentrating on inhalants, tobacco, alcohol and marijuana. The findings were collected by means of qualitative research. A total of six interviews were conducted with professionals who interact directly with such minors, as professionals working within the education sector. The interview schedule included questions which relate to the aims of the study, and which focus on the effects the said substances have on health, academic achievement and misbehaviour, as well as the relationship between these effects and academic progress. The main findings suggest that all four substances affect the student’s academic progress. This may be brought about either due to direct consequences, such as a lack in concentration or health impacts which hinder the youth from properly following the schooling, or through the impacts of the substance abuse on the health of the individual which keeps the student away from school or from studying time.
