Abstract: The purpose of this research was to interview parents that have children with autism with the aim to understand the challenges that they face when they help their child to develop social skills. Additionally, through the parents experiences the research would understand what support is needed for the parents during this developmental milestone. Data was obtained from five participants that have children with autism spectrum disorder. The research study was conducted through qualitative research. The research tool used was a semi-structured interview which was audio recorded. Once transcribed, common themes were highlighted and analyzed further. Parents gave great importance to social skills however, they stated that this development is a challenge in itself. Participants expressed that the main pillars of support were family members and the school which their child attends. However, there was little knowledge acquired from professionals about services that can help both the parents and their children. Furthermore, parents expressed how this led to the participants having to conduct their own research in order to support their children. Finally, the researcher concluded that upon diagnosis professionals must support and inform parents. Structured services must be available together with an increase of support services in order to cater for both parents and children’s needs. Furthermore, an increase in services relates to autism spectrum disorder would give parents the opportunity to choose between services according to their child’s needs. Additionally, results indicate that social work intervention would be beneficial to parents through different interventions. Social work professionals can be of assistance and support to parents in school, community and hospital environments.
