The purpose of this small-scale exploratory study was to explore mothers' and midwives' knowledge and experiences of water births. To achieve the aim and objectives of this study, a semi-structured interview was conducted among 4 mothers and 3 midwives who have experienced this method of childbirth. This method of childbirth was introduced decades ago as a form of pain relief, and is now being accepted as an alternative method of delivery. Presently in Malta only four midwives practice this method of childbirth on a small scale in a private hospital. Though many may be drawn to this new concept, other may be naturally hesitant. Knowledge and perception related to this method vary considerably among professionals and mothers to be. The findings of this study brought out the perceptions of both mothers and midwives regarding this aspect of childbirth. Ongoing concerns and controversy related to this mode of delivery have been discussed in the light of research in further detail along with several recommendations for practice and further research and education.en_GB
