Abstract: The non-medical use of prescription drugs (NMUPD) has been acknowledged as a significant global problem (NIDA, 2014). NMUPD may be defined as: the use of a psychotherapeutic substance, which was not prescribed for the individual taking it, or is taken for unintended purposes, such as for the feelings it may cause rather than the intended medical purpose (SAMHSA, 2002). Utilising a qualitative approach this study employed focus groups to explore various university students’ perceptions of NMUPD. Students have been identified as an ‘at risk’ group likely to engage in NMUPD (ESPAD, 2007). Two focus groups were conducted with seven participants per group. The data was analysed through the constant comparative method (Glaser & Strauss, 2009). Six emerging conceptual categories related to this phenomenon surfaced, namely; general knowledge, perceived perceptions of harm, perceived motivations for use, perceived risk factors, the sources of these medications and perceptions for prevention for policy making. Recommendations for further research, policy and practice conclude this study.
