One of the characteristics of the Cottonera area is the devotion towards the Passion and Resurrection of Our Lord. This is chiefly manifested in the annual Good Friday processions held in each of the Three Cities since the times of the Knights. The Good Friday procession of Cospicua dates back to the last decades of the 17th century. Cospicua had enough fertile soil on which to cultivate this devotion. In 1634, the Confraternity of Agony under the title of the Crucifix was established . It was an off-shoot of an earlier religious society known as the Societa degli Agonizzanti. The latter had received Apostolic aprroval in 1469. This Sodality together with an earlier one, the Confraternity of Death (Confratemita della Marte), spread the devotion towards the Passion of Our Lord. Hence this devotion began to spread a few years after Cospicua became a parish in 1584. [excerpt]en_GB
