The Maltese woman : a bibliography of recent literature

Abstract

In our opinion the significance of International Women's Year is that it has become clearer to many that a large part of humanity is constantly deprived of basic rights and the conditions for equality. In every country where women have started to struggle for their rights a certain amount of literature has flourished around the central debate of emancipation. In Malta this consciousness has been recent and as a consequence the written output has been relatively small. This is the first attempt at organising the scattered and mostly unknown literature concerning the Maltese woman. The collected material covers the years 1970-1975. The decision to restrict ourselves to this five-year period has been entirely arbitrary: we feel that what has been produced in this period is enough to make a start and that a longer more comprehensive bibliography on the subject could be produced in the future. The present list is divided into two parts. The first deals with what has been written on Maltese women; the second with what they have written. Most of the writing on the subject is to be found in periodical articles, books and in a few cases in academic dissertations. Newspapers have not been included as the retrieval of information in them is a vast enterprise for which we do not yet have the means. We would be very pleased to receive comments suggestions and additions that would assist an improved version of the list at some future date.
