dc.description.abstract	Between 1883 and 1916 six Maltese priests went to Australia. They were: Fr Ambrose Cassar (1883); Fr Lawrence Borg (1884); Fr Alfred Lanzon (1890); Fr Vince Fenech (1913); Fr Raphael Pace (1913); and Fr William Bonnet (1915). While each of them paid attention to the spiritual requirements of the Maltese immigrants in Australia, it would nevertheless be incorrect to suggest that all were sent out for that purpose alone. The first three - Frs Cassar, Borg, and Lanzon - were Franciscan Capuchins and spent most of their time in Queensland. It was assumed that Maltese settlement would occur in the north of the continent, and Fr Cassar had personally accompanied the very first organised group of migrants to Townsville, on the steamship Nuddea in 1883.
