Abstract: The main theme analysed in the following thesis relates to the free movement of persons contained in EC legislation, with specific regards to the field of sport. This necessarily calls for a detailed explanation of the freedom of movement, its contribution to the internal market and the contribution the European Court of Justice has given to this area of study through case-law. The case-law analysis will focus on three main areas, namely 1. Pre-Bosman case law 2. Post-Bosman case law 3. Case law regarding the right of non-EU nationals. This thesis will also discuss the way FIFA and UEF A regulations changed along the years to suit the ECJ judgements and EC legislation. Following, the principles emerging from the other chapters will be applied to Malta in the post-accession scenario. The will incorporate also an anaylsis of the 'homegrown' players rule proposed by UEFA. Finally, the last chapter will include an evaluation of possible future scenarios both regarding the local and European scenario.
