Abstract: This study explores the perceptions of foster parents on their attachment with their foster children. 5 non-kin foster parents were recruited and interviewed using the “Biographic Narrative Interpretive Method” (BNIM). All interviews varied substantially from each other and are presented as summarised narratives. Further examination using thematic analysis demonstrated 4 themes running through the data set: the beginning of the fostering experience, their relationship with the foster child, their relationship with the birth family as well as their perceptions on the fostering service. Participants generally described their fostering experience as positive; a secure attachment with their foster children has led to considerable progress in the children’s development. However, most foster parents described the distress caused by conflicts with the birth family and the agency, and the insecurity caused by the current lack of adequate support, laws and policies. These insecurities are seen to harm the quality of attachment of the foster parent to the child; recommendations to offer greater stability to the foster parents and their attachment process are presented, as suggested by the participants themselves
