Abstract: The Italian word by which each of the simple English prepositions is to be rendered may be usually known; but for the accommodation of those, who, not knowing it, wish to avoid the toil of running over a vocabulary, I will here subjoin a corresponding list of them in both languages. But what is not always·, nor perhaps by every one remarked, is. that very often in translating from English into Italian we may commit enormous blunders, if we do not change the preposition, or leave it out altogether, or make it govern a different case, or substitute for it another equivalent expression : and that intricate obscurity which sometimes we meet with in the Italian of some translations, and which rather perolexes us as to the real meaning, arises in a great measure from the translator having thought it a perfection servilely to follow the English original, as well in the syntax: as in the verbal meaning of each identical word.
