Abstract: During the first thirty years after the corning into force of the Treaty of Rome harmonisation of banking laws and practices within the Eurpopean Community has proved to be a very laborious and painstaking process. However, the signing of the Single European Act in 1987 gave a new impetus to the harmonisation of banking rules and policies with a view to achieving the conditions of an internal market in the banking sector by the end of 1992.
