Many young people today travel extensively, whether for study or leisure, and come in contact with people of different interests, values, cultures and backgrounds. An international study-period on ERASMUS exchange is one such example and can be a turning point in the life of many students following higher education in Europe. This dissertation focuses on Maltese university students and whether the experience of studying in another university changed, or otherwise, their perception of themselves as Maltese and European citizens. A qualitative approach was adopted, involving semi-structured interviews with 10 University of Malta students who went on an Erasmus exchange during the past three academic years (2015 – 2018). All students were asked to reflect on their study-period exchange, highlighting their views on European citizenship and identity with respect to the experience itself; their views towards European identity and citizenship; and whether they consider taking employment opportunities in the European labour market upon completion of their studies. Results show that overall the ERASMUS experience was a very positive one, highlighting several aspects such as the numerous friends made, the opportunity to visit many countries, gaining independence and most of all being exposed to multiple cultures with the result of developing a collective European identity and citizenship.en_GB
