Abstract: Several studies have been carried out regarding the effects of earthquakes on the Maltese Islands, and the possibility of one occurring based on past events. However, no studies have been carried out regarding the public perception of the Maltese people on earthquakes. The subject was compared to other countries with different emergency plans, warning systems and preparedness strategies. As case studies, the Maltese Islands were compared with four other island countries with similar characteristics. Thus, the aim of the study was to investigate the public perception of earthquakes in the Maltese Islands. Questionnaires were formulated and used for the study. These included both online and paper distribution to reach most social groups of the Maltese public. A total of 432 replies were collected, which are enough to picture the public perception, as the population of the Islands is relatively small. Nevertheless, a larger sample size would be required for the study to be used on a national scale, which may also include the public perception of tourists. It was expected that a high percentage of the public would not be concerned on such issue, but the analysis showed that most people agreed that measures need to be taken with regards to earthquake and tsunami management, especially in the case of an emergency. This is so as it is an overlooked subject and the Maltese public is not certain about the procedures which need to be taken in such cases. It was concluded that there is a need of greater education, but most importantly a contingency plan on the topic should be formulated, including policies to be used to prevent any damages cause by tremors. It should also include strategies on how to manage the primary and secondary effects of the earthquake such as the basic needs.
