Abstract: This research aims to answer the question: "How does one create designs that capture the essence of Malta?" in a way that appeals to the locals and looks at what visual signifiers and subject matter make a 'Maltese inspired‘ design. It provides a general overview of the concepts that shape the contemporary design market and the local identity for a Maltese audience, specifically the Millennial generation. The concept of the 'Maltese Identity‘ was explored in terms of its visual elements (signifiers objects and symbols) and the principles of design elements (line, shape/form, space, colour and texture) through in-depth interviews with Maltese artists who interpret and visually represent the 'Maltese Identity' in their work. Visual material was also collected and presented as a publication to provide a visual exploration of the theme of 'Maltese Identity‘ through local projects and designs. Another outcome of the project was the production of everyday objects inspired by the 'Maltese Identity‘ that fit into today‘s contemporary home and appeal to a mainstream market audience. The project was a way of rebranding the 'Maltese Identity‘ for a young local audience.
