Abstract: Various studies have been done to investigate the theatre nurses' practice in theatre, however studies on student nurses' perceptions of the role of the nurse in theatre are limited, both locally and internationally. This study was planned to explore the student nurses' perceptions on the role of the nurse in the operating theatre and whether student nurses' feel adequately prepared for the work involved in theatre. It also explored the student nurses' perceptions on the role of the Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs). A convenience sample was used whereby it included all fourth year nursing students who attend diploma and degree course, amounting to 48 student nurses. A descriptive exploratory design was proposed to address this study. The data collection tool consisted of a questionnaire where a response rate of 100% was obtained. Data collected was analysed manually by the researcher. Content analysis was used to analyse qualitative data which categorised data collected into themes and presented in tables whilst quantitative data was presented using tables, piecharts and bargraphs. The findings of this study reveal that the nurse's role in the operating theatre is viewed mainly as assisting the surgeon and also depends on whether the nurse works in scrubbing, anaesthesia or recovery area. Theatre work is viewed as a career that offers job satisfaction although participants perceive it is as stressful. Theatre nursing is viewed also as providing holistic care for the patient whilst ensuring patient safety and dignity. This study identifies the need for student nurses' to be allocated to theatre sometime throughout their course and that a learning module on theatre nursing is included in the curriculum.
