Abstract: The purpose of this study was to explore young female students' perception and knowledge of breast awareness. The sample consisted of 31 first year nursing diploma students. Data was collected by self-administered questionnaire. Data analysis was carried out by the usage of spreadsheets. Findings indicated that the majority of the participants had knowledge regarding breast cancer risk factors, but had some misconceptions, which could have been eliminated if health education was provided. Furthermore, it was evident that the students lacked knowledge regarding the signs, symptoms and treatment of breast cancer. When studying the students' level of breast awareness it seemed that they confuse breast awareness with breast self-examination. The students having a family history of breast cancer (n=9) seems to have a similar knowledge level to the other students. Findings suggest the implementation of a health education programme so as to increase teenage knowledge of breast awareness. A list of recommendations was given which can be implemented in breast awareness programmes.
